With more than 150 years of tobacco expertise behind us and over 5,000 colleagues now working with us, we are committed to one shared purpose: creating smiling consumers, loyal to our brands.
Working closely with our partners, we have established a seamless value chain that allows us to manage every step of the tobacco journey, from seed to smoke. Our farms in Bahia, Brazil and East Java, Indonesia, produce a selection of the finest tobacco crops. Our master blenders, artisan rollers and production teams then craft the tobacco into cigarillos and small cigars, which are delivered “from our hands to yours” in over 50 different countries around the world.
We are always passionate about investing in people and pursuing the right opportunities. And by doing just that, we can keep on delivering the best results in the most responsible way: through innovation, the highest quality products and sustainable growth.
Way back in 1864, the Burger family started a cigar and pipe tobacco business in Switzerland. Just a few years later, the entrepreneurial Geraldo Dannemann established a new venture in Bahia, Brazil, with the ambition of creating the finest cigars in the world.
After more than a century of individual successes, the Burger and DANNEMANN companies eventually came together – through their shared values and dedication to crafting the finest quality products.
And to this day, DANNEMANN Group remains family-owned and Swiss-based, driven forward by our determination to exceed expectations in everything we do.
The year is 1872. Having arrived and settled in São Félix, a small riverside township in Bahia known for its exceptionally dark and fragrant tobaccos, Geraldo soon built his first cigar factory, which is still in operation today. In fact, you can still find a few artisan charuterias (cigar rollers) here – direct descendants of the local craftspeople who worked with him originally.
Geraldo understood that to create the finest cigars in the world, he would need the best tobacco, so he began collaborating with local farmers – a partnership that continues to this day. We now have over 200 long-established family farms to supplement our own 1,000-hectare Santo Antônio farm. Together, we are continuing a proud tradition of “seed to smoke“ craftsmanship that is truly unique.
By 1890, Geraldo was elected Mayor of São Félix in recognition of his achievements. He created the first town charter and oversaw the social and economic development of the Recôncavo area. His influence is still visible today, thanks to the various buildings he constructed and the bridge spanning the Rio Paraguaçu river, connecting São Félix to its sister town of Cachoeira.
We recognise that Mother Nature is both our partner and our provider, which is why we are committed to preserving our local environment.
After more than a century of cultivation, we believe we have learned how to give our tobacco crops the best care.
We also see it as our responsibility to protect and rejuvenate the native flora and fauna, not just on our farms but within the surrounding regions in Bahia, Brazil.
This is why, in 2001, we initiated our ‘Adopt A Tree’ reforestation programme. Our aim has been to transform barren land into a natural habitat for indigenous plants and wildlife. By doing so, we hope to not only benefit the environment, but also to encourage others in the surrounding Mata Atlântica region to create similar initiatives.
With a catalogue of over 65 different native species of trees, shrubs, climbers and ground cover, we are creating a diverse planted ecosystem which mimics the composition of the original ancient forest. Each new planting is supported by hand during its first 5 years, allowing it to establish and giving it the best chance to flourish. Since 2001, we have planted more than 170,000 trees.

Today, we have our own tobacco farms in Brazil and Indonesia, each growing unique varieties from our own seed stocks. Our premium cigarillos and cigars are crafted to the highest standards at ten production sites across Europe, the Americas and Asia.
We also have a global network of offices for our Agronomy, Research & Development, Marketing, Sales, Logistics and Distribution activities.
